Running in the winter

As for running in the winter, the most important thing is to wear the right clothes.

You have to cover your head with a warm hat and have good running shoes. As for what else to wear, you need thermal clothing, it is recommended not to wear clothing that absorbs a lot of your sweat. This is because the more wet your clothes are, dictates the more cold you become.

I preferred tight black running pants and a long sleeved thermal shirt. Under Armour has clothing especially for this type of activity. Something that I really like is that these clothes are not made in China, but made in a Hispanic country, meaning that the material is better and stronger. With these tight pants  and long sleeve shirts, I just need to add a warm hat, light gloves and a sweatshirt and with that I can run at temperatures up to about 10 below zero. If there is snow or ice on sidewalks, I suggest wearing running shoes with little spikes that are attached to the soles of the running shoes. These are recommended because when there is some snow or ice on the sidewalks the spikes help you keep balance so you do not slip while running.

One of the best places to shop running gear is Sport Chek:

Snowboarding

Since I came to Canada I always wanted to go snowboarding. I had never had the opportunity to do so before, of course, because I lived in a tropical country. In El Salvador there wasn't any snow to practice the sport. So when I came to Canada that was one my goals, snowboarding.

The first time I went snowboarding at Glen Eden, Milton. I knew it would be an unforgettable experience and it was. I fell so many times that the next day my butt hurt a lot but the truth is that I love this sport.

Eventually I started going more often and started to get better at it. My girlfriend noticed how much I enjoyed the sport, so for my birthday last year she bought a board for me so I no longer have to rent.

Today snowboarding has become one of my passions. Whenever I have free time I grab my gear and I go snowboarding. Truth be told, I love to snowboard. It is nothing like I had experienced before and I truly enjoy it. I plan to continue snowboarding, as much as my body can take.

Winter

This is my second winter in Canada.

I've been living in Canada for a year and a half. Unlike El Salvador where the rainy season is considered to be winter and the sunny season, summer there is much more to the seasons here. Seasons here in Canada are remarkable, everything seems to accommodate to seasonal changes, from landscapes to people's mood.

Fall was a wonderful season, however, the winter did surprise me. The sub 0 temperatures and wind chill created a sensation of cold that I can hardly describe. At first I was amazed to see how everyone else could follow a routine and live their lives by going to work, etc but then I realized it's part of Canada and Canadians got used to it already from many years ago.

I remember my first winter in Canada, even though it wasn't as cold as winter 2013, I didn't want to buy warm clothing because I wasn't used to having warm clothing. However, I decided to follow the advice of the people whom I live with, I bought winter clothes such as coat, jacket, gloves, and a hat, etc. My new clothes made my life in the frigged cold winter months a lot easier.

This winter I've been drinking a lot of hot chocolate and I really enjoyed being out and about experiencing the cold. I have come to notice that although this cold climate is home for a lot of people, many Canadians don't like the cold and complain about the winter. For me, the seasons bring me joy and I am happy to be living here in Canada, even in the winter.

Autumn in Toronto

Autumn or Fall officially starts on September 21st but visually it depends where you are in Canada to see the changing colours on the trees.

This natural phenomenon happens when most of the maple trees and generally most trees begin to drop their leaves. However, Fall occurs sometimes in late September or October. This 2012 I saw many colours in Toronto, especially near the high park area and let me tell you, I love fall.

Fall is my favourite season because of the changing colours of the leaves are truly magnificent and beautiful to see. I love to go bike riding to the parks close to home and enjoy looking at the colours of red, orange, and yellow that were once green on the trees.

First days in Canada

Someone once said to me, "To travel is the only thing you can buy and you become richer". I always thought it was a very wise statement, but now that I'm actually living it, I can say it is totally true. Visiting other countries, other cultures, other ways of life opens your eyes. It makes you more perceptive because while you learn from it, you also become more aware of your roots. I'm now in Canada surviving in the cold weather and I am learning about different cultures. I'm getting to know new people, gaining experience, growing up, and finally finding my true personality because of it all.

After so much time spent planning this trip, it finally came time to live it. The truth is that minutes before getting on the plane I wasn't that sure about it. Goodbyes are not my thing, and I thought it was going to be really tough. But just minutes later, and even more when I arrived in Canada, I realized what I could not have done better. The possibility of studying and living abroad is unique and, therefore, I decided to enjoy all of this from the beginning, right from the airport.

My plane left El Salvador at 2:00 pm and the trip lasted 5 hours which at many times became uncomfortable. But because I became flooded with euphoria to finally reach my destination, and the fact that it was night time, made everything a little easier. So, at 9:00 pm local time the plane landed as I peeked out the window to my new found home. Everything looked amazing and experiencing the unknown is always fascinating. Traveling somewhere new is up to amaze you everyday.

Finally, the journey had ended and reached its destination, we were at home and about to go to sleep. The next day was devoted exclusively to knowing the city and the place where I was to study in the center of Toronto. The first place I was about to experience here in a foreign land was the subway. On the way there I noticed all the lights, the open shops, many cars, and people very concentrated on getting to where they were going. Like any major city, Toronto has it all but what was different was from home that I seemed to notice most was there is so  much less crime compared to El Salvador, and the people here are very friendly. The coexistence of styles is what strikes me about this place and what truly makes it different. It has the accessibility of any city: being close to everything and having such safe transportation systems. The people here tend to be full of  kindness and now nearly two years of living in Toronto whenever I go downtown it fascinates me and surprises me every time.

My little piece of home in a cold winter month

So, my mom and sister are living in El Salvador, and they had never visited Canada. I decided to convince them to come here and see where I live, and how my new life is treating me. My mom is a very demure woman and she doesn't like to travel but this time I had convinced her to come see me. My sister on the other hand is a very adventurous person and likes to go out and travel. So it wasn't a problem to convince her.

To begin my story I will tell you that their flight arrived December 22, 2012 and they departed January 1, 2013. That means we didn't have that much time together as they couldn't get more days off work.

When my Mom got off the plane she was immediately delighted with the airport. They arrived around 9:00 pm and once I picked them up and we left the airport it was quite cold and my mom had never experienced such cold temperatures. However, I've never seen her so excited about the weather.

Before they came to Canada I had created an itinerary of all the things we were going to do and the places we were going to visit. These locations were Blue Mountain, CN Tower, and Niagara Falls. I wanted my family to experience a Canadian Christmas and so they absolutely did.

My mom still says that it has been the best vacation of her life and she cannot wait to come back and visit again.

It was the best Christmas I've had since I came to Canada, she was my little piece of home in the frigid cold month of December.

My Sheridan experience

Attending Sheridan as an international student has been one of the best experiences I have ever had.
Having an education in another country is a privilege that many people want, that is why I try to put a lot of effort in every step I take when it comes to my future.

Sheridan has given me the opportunity to have an education in Canada. I've made many friends and I have finally found my passion which is advertising and everything related to it.

I have had the opportunity to join the Sheridan soccer extramural and intramural team (something that I really enjoy) which has allowed me to participate in soccer tournaments in other Colleges and Universities.

Sheridan teachers are very knowledgeable and friendly. They really encourage you to do your best and exceed your self expectations.
